Dyeing
Reducing Agent
Supplies reducing power in the dyebath to convert insoluble vat or sulphur dye into its soluble, fibre-substantive form.
Process stage & fibres
| Process stage | Dyeing |
|---|---|
| Fibres suited | Cotton, in vat and sulphur dyeing. |
Function
Vat and sulphur dyes are insoluble until they are chemically reduced, and this product supplies that reduction so the dye can penetrate the fibre. Once the fabric is dyed, it is exposed to air or oxidised, which locks the colour in as a wash-fast pigment. The same product is also used afterwards to clear unwanted surface dye from a faulty or over-dyed batch.
Typical applications and what it solves
- Weak or uneven shade traced back to incomplete reduction of the dye
- Reduction-clearing unwanted surface dye after a vat or sulphur dyeing
- Maintaining reducing power through a long dyebath run as oxygen re-enters the liquor
Technical data
| Ionic nature | Not applicable, an inorganic or organic reducing salt rather than a surfactant |
|---|---|
| Solubility | Soluble in water |
| Compatibility | Do not combine with oxidising agents, including bleach or peroxide residues left in the machine, as they will destroy the reducing power before it reaches the dye. |
| Storage and shelf life | Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, tightly closed and away from moisture and oxidising agents. |

Handling and storage
Handle with gloves, eye protection and, in enclosed dyehouse areas, adequate ventilation. Reducing agents of this type can release irritating fumes on contact with acid or moisture. Follow the supplier SDS.
